But yeah, if that was his only comic XKCD would still be a great human achievement.

To be fair I think most insecure guys made this mistake at some point in their life. It's not really hard to fault a nerdy high schooler for being afraid to make the first move while still being angsty that they're still single.

I just appreciate the comic because it outlines so clearly what makes that stance retarded.

You mean, the truth?

It's just a painfully obvious and easy stab at Microsoft and Vista. Given that XKCD is known for being creative and fairly original with it's work, it's incredibly disappointing when they stoop to CTRL-ALT-DEL levels of humor.

And realistically, Vista isn't even that bad. It's main problem was that it was created too soon. If you ran it on a higher end PC it supposedly can use your specs more efficiently/better, but the problem is it sucks on low ends because it's a memory hog in itself. So when retarded people decided to sell 1-2gig ram pc's with vista and it seemed to function much worse than xp, obviously you ran into problems.

Hell, I've actually gotten used to Vista. I saw my older brother's XP laptop and was confused for a good 10 minutes. And yeah, my laptop doesn't even run it so well, with the amazing 2 gigs of ram. Though I still have this complaint: I need to upgrade my version of Vista if I want more than 3 gigs of RAM, because otherwise it just won't read it. What the fuck?

Zerg

Vista was released either waaay too soon, or it's simply a shitty idea with poor optimization.

Even if it were released now, I'd still call it too soon for the kind of resources it uses because I'm willing to bet most office PCs in 2009 don't have over 2 gigs of RAM. A good portion of home PCs doesn't have that either.

In fact, pretty much only gaming PCs come with 4+ gigs and 300-dollar video cards. An OS shouldn't be catering to top 25%.

There are also a lot of little annoyances (it's hard to connect to the internet via wireless, lots of games not being made for Vista, slight tendency to crash) that annoy me, mostly because I'm so used to using XP, which has been refined a shit ton of times.

The way I see it, complaining about Vista now is like complaining that a game is buggy when you buy it on opening week-yeah, it's a legitimate complaint, they should've given you a full game, but rest asssured, for it'll be fixed eventually.

Jenius

The main thing I don't understand about Vista hate is who it's coming from. Yeah, the uneducated masses can have a problem with it, that was MSoft's fault for not waiting a bit till computers were better to release it. But why does XKCD and other more nerdy places take shots at it? From what I've read from people who know what they're talking about, if you have a good computer, vista is probably better.

My computer's too old to run it (1 gig of ram and such), but if I got a new one with more modern specs I'd probably be willing to give vista a shot.

Being able to turn off annoying security features and getting used to a new Start menu does not mean that you're capable, or willing, to get an OS that requires you to use a console for 90% of it's actions :V

To be honest, I'm thinking about switching to something Linux based, but everytime I think I might I don't really see a reason to other than obligatory "I use linux" comments. I really don't want to dig for drivers every time I want to open notepad.

3 gigs of RAM
yeah.
that's due to physical limitations of your computer.
(it can use more than that, but it's slow and crappy to do so)

basically, 32 bits can address 2^32 memory addresses. 4gb.
with windows, presumably 3gb of that is for ram, and 1gb is for other things.

other things being anything else that you plug in that needs to act as though it's regular memory (monitors, usb stuff, pretty much anything, really).

so yeah. without a 64 bit os, you're pretty much fucked.

and you could use say, 2 32 bit words to address more memory in a 32 bit computer, but it's not very useful.
memory is the main bottleneck in computer speed. the last thing you want is more work to access it. (and if you need that much ram, chances are you don't want it to be slow)

also, this reminds me:
if any of you guys are getting a computer, make sure the ram/bus is fast.
you really don't need to give a shit about anything else.
(well, graphics card too, i guess. but that still takes a fairly distant second place)
cpu doesn't matter at all except for bus speed. (well, cache size matters, but they're determined by bus speed, as far as i know)

notallama
03-09-2009, 04:50 PM

if you have any intent to do programming, do it. the tools for that are several orders of magnitude better than windows ones.
(the most basic "notepad" style programs do text hilighting, for example.)

and the main issue is getting it installed. after that, it's not awful.
and sometimes it will install fine with no need to track down and compile a driver. depends on your hardware. (i had no such luck.)

if you're not going to do any programming, i don't really see the point of switching.
hopefully there will come a day when everything works cross-platform, but that day is not here yet. games and photoshop and such generally won't work.

Ubuntu is a pretty nice OS. I'd recommend trying it out for anyone who has an interest in computers. I'm pretty much back on XP 100% now, but it's because I can't work from home whilst booted in Ubuntu and there are many other times where I don't feel like fucking with it in the event something goes wrong, so it's easier just to have an OS I know will work with just about everything I use.

Also, it is a good OS for programmers, because it's far more versatile and a lot of things wound up being written using Linux tools, but if you just need something to "set and forget", Windows is still the way to go.

Yeah that's kinda why I haven't switched to it. I think I'm computer savvy enough to use it and I know some programming, I just don't really see the point as I wouldn't be doing stuff that would benefit from running Linux. I'd just be one of those annoying people who talk about their use of linux when all they use their computer for is the internet/open office.
