I'm also really excited that Obama won, though I really don't know how he couldn't have.
There was this huge spontaneous celebration that happened after he won in the center of Ann Arbor and I ran around waving an american flag, because I was actually excited to be an american for the first time.
And as much as I believe that our entire political system is essentially a sham, I think it speaks alot about our own ability to organize and [i]care about something, because it's not about Obama, specifically, as much as his win was about ourselves and accomplishing something big.

Hay guys let's give more money to unproductive people because that will save our economy.
(Actually I did vote for Obama but at the same time I'm terrified what he's going to do when he gets into office).

Well you know what I meant, when things actually start rolling. I mean he what, got inaugurated less than a month ago. Our political system moves too slowly for anything significant to happen yet.
Already they're just running into how stubborn senate republicans can be.

I think that right now Obama's doing a good job. The stimulus plan looks to be pretty good at first, when they find organizations that are worth giving money to, we'll move on from tax cuts to infrastructure and social projects.

You realize people are unproductive because our system is classist, sexist, racist and ableist, right?
If I had been historically and consistently oppressed and marginalized and ♥♥♥♥ed over, I wouldn't do much either.
He scares the shit out of me because of how powerful he is. He's a great speaker, and that gives him a lot of power to create real change (shut up, just because it's his tagline it doesn't mean it can't be true), but if he's going to do so and if so if it's going to be change for the better is pretty uncertain to me.
I don't expect him to be great, I'm just hoping he's decent.

I was happy Obama won. McCain could/would never have done anything serious about solving the problems in the Middle East. I see Obama as being more capable of finding solutions there, though I am not certain he'll be able to handle Israel well (too much lobby there, Israel/the Jewish population really needs to start admitting their wrongs and working towards a solution). He looked like he was going to do better with Iran, but if he's really going to base any solution on the premise that Iran gives up its nuclear program, it will pose considerable more difficulties. Economy-wise, I am happy that his economists are not as liberal as Bush's, but he is rather protectionist, which is pretty bad, in my opinion.
All in all, my early happiness has been tempered by the actual facts.
I didn't vote. I just don't give a shit about the election. Bail out money pisses me off, and its not like this guy has a great voting record (wire tapping isn't that bad right guys? let's support an IMMIffffINGGRATIONWALL instead of actually reforming the shittastic immigration system in this country rationally). I also find it gross the way people are so inspired by him This man is not Martin Luther King, he's a black Bill fffffff.

I supported Obama because he is competent and intelligent, something we rarely get out of a candidate.
I think the fact that the US hates anything "socialist" so much prevents us from making any real progress. We make some shitty half-assed program like Medicaire/Medicaid, rather than going with a much much much more efficient nationalized system. We always go with "capitalist" solutions (eg bailouts, even though they aren't really capitalist) rather than real solutions, and our education system is awful and nobody cares.
College should be free, healthcare should be free to those that can't afford it, and public transportation should be free and a LOT better. The government should stop trying to regulate the market, but work alongside it. We need to severely reform our election system, mainly with IRV and Direct Democracy (Wiki "Government in Switzerland"). Also, we should work on some sort of nationalized wi-fi internet, possibly via satellite. This will probably be more viable as the technology progresses. Also, we need a lot better unemployment benefits.
Of course, the goal should not be to simply institute these plans, but make them as efficient, widespread and good as we possibly can. That's where education and election reform come in - to create a public that cares enough to elect people that will make these systems work.
I think Obama is taking us in the general direction of all of those things, and is a hell of a lot better than McCain, who would take us away from them. Obviously he's not perfect, but he's as good as we are going to get right now.

but did you VOTE for him?You have to be 18 to vote. Are you just trying to point out the fact that I'm not?
State school is if you're smart enough and Private school shouldn't be free because then...how would they get money?Subsidies, most likely. And these schools may have some tuition fees if you can afford it. (Bill Gates jr. doesn't need the government to pay for college)
TAX PAYER BURDEN HELLO
Or we could just lobby our government to regulate drug companies from charging ridiculous premiums for drugs? But that's about as naive as what you said.Yes, nobody has ever done universal healthcare before ever and it has never, ever worked.
We already pay more per capita with medicaire/medicaid than the nationalized NHS in Britain. But we get worse care for fewer people. Universal healthcare costs less if implemented efficiently.
And that's going to be funded with what? Dreams and Marshmallows?Stop spending so much money in Iraq, and add a ridiculous gas tax if need be.
Here it looks like you're advocating that a country 300 million strong should implement direct democracy. I could be reading this wrong though. Dear god I really hope I am.(Wiki "Government in Switzerland")

I understand that the price of college in America is really high (moreso than Canada, apparently in McGill you can go to school for like $3000 a semester, that's crazy), but honestly, in our society if you don't like it, don't buy it.
I pay 1500 euros per year.

Now, Switzerland does seem to make it far easier for private citizens to exercise their power directly through referendum, which I can agree with at a state or local level, but I'm not really sure how I feel about this at a federal level. Again, our country is ffffing massive. But eh.
Actually, there's a debate in the Netherlands about referenda these days. Some parties want to expand the power of referendums and hold them more often. Personally, while I like the idea of direct democracy, I think referenda should be used sparingly, but if used, should be binding. Though I guess the debate isn't very relevant to the American situation: the United States are massive. It's impossible to hold any kind of referendum there.

You obviously have no experience with this. People at this school make enough fuss about our current financial aid system (which is need blind, and throws around a fair amount of money at the poor). If this was expanded, a lot of alums would pull out from funding Vassar (believe me, there are a lot of people here who want to do just that). Private colleges are basically businesses, and you're basically suggesting that their cash flow be cut off. I understand that the price of college in America is really high (moreso than Canada, apparently in McGill you can go to school for like $3000 a semester, that's crazy), but honestly, in our society if you don't like it, don't buy it. As I mentioned, there are other options, and many state schools have improved rapidly in the past decade to attract bright talent that would otherwise go out of state. Where did I suggest their cash flow be cut off?
I'm all for privatized health care and am optimistic about it, but the government needs to address the concerns of, uh, how they're not going to ffff it up by privatizing it, which seems to be a pretty common theme when it gets privatized. Also, what you said is that people should get it for free who cannot afford it, and that's still wrong, I'm fine with people receiving health care if they pay the taxes for it, but what it really looks like you suggested in your first post is that health care remain privatized and that tax payers take on poor people's health care entirely. Which is ridiculous. How is that ridiculous? I define healthcare as a right, something everyone needs for a healthy society, do you disagree? Poor people cannot pay for healthcare themselves, but this does not mean they don't deserve basic care. Someone has to pay for it.
Or we could stop spending so much money on our inefficient wealth fare system which drains far more money than the Iraq War has?Assuming you meant welfare, yes, that too.
And putting a tax on gas is pretty silly. Do you understand how much bitching there was when gas went up $3 a gallon? $4 a gallon? It was on the news. There were people complaining about the government and the EHF BEE EYE. It was crazy. Gas is cheaper now, but no politician in their right mind would even CONSIDER raising taxes right now, especially not on such a controversial commodity. Honestly, is as offensive to most Americans as saying "hi i ffffed your dead wife's body." That doesn't mean that a gas tax is not good, combined with a decent public transportation system. Guess what people did when gas was $4 a gallon? They threw away their Hummer and bought Priuses. I don't care if everyone is all QQ about it, it forces them to stop buying stupidly inefficient cars and makes them carpool, etc.
No, I just honestly didn't feel like I had to type anything else except "you're wrong." But ok, I guess I will.
Direct Democracy is not what is going on in Switzerland. That system is often referred to as "representative" direct democracy, which makes shit all no sense. I'm not entirely sure exactly what other models you're describing (i'd be lying if i said that i cared about modern european government) but when you use a term like "direct democracy" i am going to assume that you're actually talking about direct democracy and not "direct" democracy.
Now, Switzerland does seem to make it far easier for private citizens to exercise their power directly through referendum, which I can agree with at a state or local level, but I'm not really sure how I feel about this at a federal level. Again, our country is ffffing massive. But eh.Well considering I reference Switzerland in my post, that would mean I supported Swiss "direct" democracy.

Right. They'll pay for it. With higher taxes. I'm fine with that. I'm not fine with the government providing welfare health care because that would be expensive and something I would never support as a future tax-payer. And it isn't something 90% of Americans are going to support either.
You realize that part of the reason health care is so expensive in general is because they can't actually refuse service to people in need right? If someone can't pay, that price is just passed on through the hospital itself to us.
I'm not saying I support being taxed extra to pay for other people's health care, but realistically, we're already paying for it.

Though I have a decent amount of problems with NHS to begin with. Realistically, we could reduce medical expenses a vast amount of we just stopped people from filing frivolous lawsuits against doctors. Malpractice insurance for doctors is huuuuuggggeeeeee, and it's because our system of suing sucks balls. The doctors have to pass that expense onto the hospital via their pay, and the hospital gets that money out of us.

We keep having this problem, and that problem seems to be that you don't understand that you can't transplant European solutions to American problems because of (among other things) vastly different demographics and infrastructure.
England, for instance, has caps on the amount of money a company can charge for a drug. WE DON'T. England does not have a ffffton of money tied up in unnecessary military defense that would be nigh impossible for a politician to undo without committing political suicide. WE DO. etc etc
Plus that whole Americans have a much greater aversion to taxes than Europeans do thing.

I hate the idea of bailouts and excessive government spending to try to claw this country out of recession. All we're doing is delaying the inevitable and fucking over future generations. I could probably go on for days about this, but I've made my thoughts known to my Congressmen and other leaders what I think of this weasly, backdoor-dealing, Socialist bullshit and made a list of people never to vote for, so there's no use in continuing to discuss it for me.
In the end, I voted for McCain because of his economic policies, so I was not happy when Obama won, took office, and then proceeded to nominate every member of the Clinton Administration on his cabinet. The Middle Eastern situation at this point is little more of than a red herring to get fundamentalists on either side of the spectrum fired up, despite the attention it got during the election. The economy is the crux of this nation's future at this point, and I don't think we're going to be able to hop in an economic time machine to 1995.
The problem is that the bailout is not being put towards the correct things. You make education more affordable, then you give yourself 4 years before the (large number) of 18 year olds go into the job market.
I dunno, I guess I'm just pissed that all of the state school organizations are cutting funding. It's like "hey, we're fucked, but let's make our kids dumber too!"

Here's an unfortunate truth for you and everyone else on this forum who is in college: higher education is a giant waste of time. I can't think of a bigger waste of a couple trillion dollars than for the government to throw more money down the toilet in colleges and universities.
Actually, I should qualify those statements - not all higher education is a waste. Masters and PHD programs still hold a lot of value.
Realistically, if the government is hellbent on spending an absurd amount of money on a self-correcting system like our economy, which is a stupid premise anyhow since all it does is sell out more of our resources to countries like China, they should spend the money on things they will get some value out of - subsidize research and development in new technology, public works, tax breaks, etc., etc.

Having a Bachelor's Degree these days is like having a high school diploma. Nobody really cares what your major was because some absurdly high percentage of time you don't wind up in that field anyhow. Additionally, there's the problem that if you go to a private school and have a rich family that donates large sums of money to the school, they'll give you a degree no matter what you do. Employers know all these things and they also know that education is no substitute for experience, which puts you in the same catch-22 as any high school graduate where you can't earn the experience without getting the job but you can't get the job without the experience.
Masters and PhDs are different because there's a much higher level of commitment and people that pursue those degrees almost always have a passion about their field you don't find in people with BDs. There's also the fact that the level of knowledge you get with a PhD or a Masters is far greater than anything you learn in a Bachelor's program because they are structured specifically to force you to make the knowledge your own.
My advice to a high school graduate today? If you're not going to get a Masters, either don't waste your time and money on college. Or spend the money on technical school.

My education cost about $140,000 and I had amazing financial aid because I worked my ass off in high school and college. Yea, totally. I love the large dearth of sources available to me as a Roman Historian. I just wrote this paper and guess what, there were sometimes where I didn't even quote Suetonius!
I mean, its really convenient not to have to gloss over tome after tome of boring shit like I do in my other classes, but going to the large ass Latin -----> English dictionary to figure out if Caesar's use of the word pietas actually means piety here or if its just an abstract way of talking about the expectations of the male and by the way how does this compare to Virgil's use of the world in the Georgics and how does that compare to his use of the word in the Aeneid just doesn't really seem to me like a fun time. Plus, I just can't shake the feeling that I'm just making shit up when I write about Ancient History.
Meh, if it's not your cup of tea, then it isn't. I actually studied more Greek and Egyptian history and spent the most of my time learning about material culture instead of major historical events.
But it's not like it makes any kind of difference, since I write databases for a living now.

It owns.
My favorite part is the fact that his middle name is in quotes. I wanna find out who paid for that to be put up so I can be like "You don't have to put Hussein in quotes. That's really his middle name."
There's also the fact that the bottom of the sign never changes. It said the same thing along with a caricature of Kerry in '04 and Gore in '00.

It really doesn't need to because its true.
Except for the same sex marriages part all of those guys are gigantic pussies who would never jeopardize their careers over homos.
Oh I know it's just the laziness of it that makes me chuckle slightly.

Does anyone else feel like John McCain threw the election? Like, seriously?
I personally was very happy to see Obama win, having been a supporter of him for a while.
Okay, Peggy Hill.

Obama was the lesser of two evils. I can't say I'm a huge fan, but he's FAR better than McCain/Palin.

No? Why would he? It was likely his last shot at the presidency.
Don't tell me you believe that poopy about him throwing the election to get back at the GOP for what they http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17/tidalkraken111/emot-airquote.gifdid to himhttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17/tidalkraken111/emot-airquote.gif back in 2000.

No, he just seems like he made the exact wrong choice or took the exact wrong position all counter to what he has previous said he believes at every possible chance. And he seemed genuinely friendly towards Obama. I don't mean anything conspiratorial about it though.

I think that had more to do with the incompetence of his campaign rather than him giving up. His campaign kept clinging to Rovian tactics even after it became abundantly clear none of his smears were working. People just really didn't give a shit about Bill Ayers or Antoin Rezko.

I still don't think it was incompetence. I don't know, just a feeling.

I am, it's just weird because I went to this one concert in the city because a girl I was hooking up with went.
They were a really good punk band, but they had a song about how Bush did 9/11 and I got so angry I punched a fellow mosher.
Which was ok, because we were drunk and moshing.
