Not necessarily. Just a band that utilizes horns.

IMO, modern bands are too confined to the bass/guitar/vocals/drummer combonation where the only variety is number of guitars or the use of a keyboard.

And brass instruments in general give me a hard on.

Sublime, of course. Flobots has some non-conventional instruments.

Well I am a fan of black people.

Sublime is ok. I don't know why I haven't checked out Flobots yet, I love that one song about the handlebars.

I've already got all of CAKE's albums. Its kind of what propelled me to find more music with random instruments.

And IMO The Distance isn't the greatest of Cake.

This is pretty much why I got into symphonic metal. They'll have organs, actual piano (rather than bands that use keyboards for the electric piano sound a la powermetal), flutes, choirs, all sorts of random shit and it's just a breath of fresh air from most stock bands.

As far as music with horns in it, all I can think of is some jpop I listen to occasionally, CAKE (which has been mentioned like 50 times in this thread already) and actual orchestral music. Brass doesn't get a lot of love, unless you like the saxophone in which case I assume you already know you have options.

Kant

You mentioned Vampire Weekend and then said that they use a lot of weird instruments, which is precisely what I hate about Vampire Weekend. Not that they use weird instruments (they really don't) but that random people that don't know that much about music assume that since they use random instruments they're some kind of ingenious pioneers when really they're so fucking ripping off so many different people that it's unreal.

I'M SHADY.

I CARE A LOT ABOUT THINGS WHICH DON'T MATTER.

RARRRR

Mostly, I think Vampire Weekend is fun to listen to, but I don't understand how people actually like them anymore than they like, say, breathing.

I was saying that if the OP wanted to listen to something that wasn't the usual bass/guitar/vocal/drums, then he could go for Vampire weekend, because they have some weird instruments.

I imagine, however, that you could state 8 or 20 far cooler bands which did the shit that Vampire Weekend did like 10 years ago but never got appreciated because they never SOLD OUT like Vampire Weekend.

that's what creativity is, though: stealing ideas.
(and making slight changes/mixing another stolen idea in)

Kant

They sound different than a usual band.

That's what the OP asked for.

I am sorry that I am not hip enough

Kant
02-23-2009, 03:57 PM
That's what I meant.

The bands that I listen to that no one knows are pretty 'mainstream' in as far as they're bass/guitar/bass/vocals/drums, besides the Easy Star All Stars, there's nothing crazier than that in my repetoir.

Getcher stank on wit some funk.

Check out the Ohio Players.

Also, can you be more any more specific. "Horns" is an incredibly vague term, spanning everything from obscure indie rock to old classical music.

LegendShark

The point is that its vague. I like all types of music.
