I dunno, I just think that if the average person found out that they had a clone, there would be a lot less passive aggressive angst. Maybe I just took it wrong because they don't even make it clear whether or not cloning is something that happens all of the time.

I think the angst has more to do with Bell is coming to grips with the possibility that he won't be going home and that everything he's thought might not be real more than the fact that there is another clone there with him. The interactions are partially a source of tension, but the implications of being a clone is more what drives the emotional struggle which occurs in the film. At least that's what I took away from it.

I've heard good things about In The Loop. Obviously, the movie got kind of shafted in distribution here.

A lot of the movies I liked in 2009 were the ones that didn't get a lot of distribution unfortunately. Its good to see The Hurt Locker getting praise, but movies like Moon and In The Loop are practically ignored for things like Transformers 2 or New Moon. Its kind of retarded that good movies get such limited exposure and corporate crap gets so much.

Yeah, I guess. I did like the movie, though.

Yeah, I know. I never got to see The Hurt Locker because I was at summer camp while it was out, and I wanted to see Me and Orson Welles but it was in theaters for literally two weeks and I never got the chance. The Road was also only in theaters for a limited amount of time, but I saw that opening night.

Also, the Hangover was in theaters FOREVER. I still haven't seen it though. Is it out on DVD?

Yeah I downloaded a DVD rip around Christmas. I personally didn't see what the big deal was with that movie though. I mean it was pretty funny at times, but didn't it get nominated for Best Picture or some shit? Are you kidding?

Also, something about this guy rubs me the wrong way and I haven't liked him in anything he's done:

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.
My favorite movie.
One of my favorites. It used to be my absolute favorite until I watched again and realized how pretentious it got in the middle.

But still, fabulous fucking movie.
No, it won Best Comedy (or Musical lol) at the Globes. Which isn't a big deal at all, because the Globes are a bigger joke than the Oscars. That said, it was a brilliantly executed absurdist comedy. Also, I happen to be a huge Zach Galifianakis fan boy. I can spell his name from memory now. The man can do no wrong.

Yes at the Galifianakis part. I too can spell his name from memory, and it never gets old when he pretends not to know how to pronounce it.

The funniest thing that I've ever seen him do was pretend to be his twin brother during Live at the Purple Onion. I pretty much died.

Ok. The Hangover was not brilliantly executed. I felt highly manipulated after the fourth time they did the old "scene-concludes-and-is-followed-by-montage-set-to-contemporary-Top-40-hit" trick. You have to earn a montage, you can't just throw one in wherever you're too lazy to find a transition to the next scene. The movie just cashed in on the Apatow "gross-out-comedy-that's-actually-a-sweetheart" formula, and then watered it down to make matters worse. And the marketing campaign just tried so hard to make this "the #1 smash hit comedy of the century!!!" that I couldn't help but feel let down. Perhaps next time I'd like it more if they weren't so smug as they shoved their movie down my throat. Also, I'm all for Galifianakis, but in a lot of his work, especially the Between the Ferns stuff, I feel he just barns Tim and Eric humor hardcore(something that was cheekily acknowledged in the Vodka Movies – still the funniest thing I've seen in the last year or so).

Related: I could probably quote The Hangover having never even seen it.

Spewing quotes from movies out of your asshole isn't funny. It's lame. I mean, I can enjoy a good quote session now and again (especially if we're talking spongebob or Spaceballs), but all the time? We get it, it's funny. Stop killing it. Make your own jokes.

Captain Piano
02-08-2010, 11:03 PM
I love the fact that it was smug and lame. To me, it was part of the joke. Sure, the marketing was horrible corporate bullshit, but that's to be expected. But that has nothing to do with the quality of the movie itself.

The first part is fine with me, I just didn't see it in that way.

As for the second, (and this strangely coincides with that Nickelback debate), unlike music (well, like music, but to a much, much, greater degree) I always come into a movie loaded down with expectations. These may change from movie to movie. For instance, in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, I knew that it was a Terry Gilliam film so it would be weird and fantastical, and I knew that it was Heath Ledger's last movie. I knew nothing about the plot, so I expected relatively little. Coming into The Hangover, on the other hand, I expected to laugh my ass off. When there was even a hint that that may not happen, I immediately felt let down and manipulated, and this feeling affected the rest of my reading of the film.

Expectations are a bitch, I know.

Yeah, movie trailers suck.

When I learned that Kevin Smith was directing the movie Cop Out (originally called A Couple of Dicks), I thought it would be gold. Kevin Smith, Bruce Willis, a buddy cop movie? Then I saw this trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6t0dWo58jg) in theaters. The movie looked like horseshit, and made me hate Tracy Morgan more than ever.

Then I saw the red band trailer (http://www.firstshowing.net/2010/02/04/watch-this-brand-new-red-band-for-kevin-smiths-cop-out/) (taken down from youtube, because apparently WB wants no one to see their movie), and I've been frantically trying to convince people that it has the possibility of being a funny movie.

Agreed, but this has nothing to do with the quality of the movie and it's unfortunate that people doing that ruins the movie for people who haven't seen it. It's probably why I hate Napoleon Dynamite.

I hate Napoleon Dynamite because it's not very funny. I mean, the first time I saw it, it was pretty funny, because it was entirely new. Then I saw it fifty times in 7th grade because everyone thought it was hilarious, and it lost all of its humor and caused me to die inside when anyone mentions it ever.

Also, I blocked the two girls on facebook who have been messaging Hangover quotes to each other the whole damn night. I just couldn't take it anymore.

I think it's more because people often go to movies for a conversation piece, and quoting them is one of the more natural ways to reference it.

There was a pretty cool scene in The World Ends with you(video game not a movie) where a guy was talking about how his business model revolved quite readily around this.

True dat. I think that's one of the reasons why I wasn't madly in love with the Hangover - half the good jokes were in the trailer. I mean, like, spoiling the Mike Tyson cameo? Bad form.

U kidding me?

That was the worst piece of shit I've ever seen. I thought I was enjoying it all throughout, and then at the end I thought, as I always do, "What was that movie about?". And I couldn't think of one damn thing. Because it was about nothing. It is literally the most pretentious thing I have ever seen.

Eternal Sunshine, while it does expel some of that inherent Charlie Kaufman pretentiousness around the middle, manages to have such a good beginning and ending that it still manages to be one of my favorite movies of all time. Although it has been kicked down a few pegs from since I saw it the second time. But still really fucking good.

Speaking of Charlie Kaufman, the last film I saw was Being John Malkovich, which I enjoyed quite a lot. It was nothing groundbreaking, but it was entertaining. And funny as hell.

Unless the movie itself is a metaphor for his play (ultimately garbage and a waste of time) and he could have just save d the nonsense and made a movie that made sense, or the play is a metaphor for the movie itself and Charlie Kaufman is a self-involved asshole who shouldn't be allowed to direct his own movies.

The play is a metaphor for life, not the movie. It's about how people tend to gravitate towards playing the same roles that people have played before, and how society as a whole tends to be self-replicating. Being caught in the same cycles that were around since you were born.

Also, finally saw Control. Massively overrated.

Gerty is pretty awesome and it definitely was my favorite movie of 2009. I'm curious as to where you think the character development was weak considering it was practically a one man show.

Also I just finished up seeing the movie Black Dynamite. Hilarious fails to describe how funny this film is. Self aware and intelligent satires are few and far between these days but Black Dynamite pulls it off. It manages to take all the great parts of blaxploitation films of the 70s and poke fun at those films at the very same time.

I don't think I've laughed quite as hard at a movie in a long time. The movie is really great and its the small things which help take it from just a simple spoof to something more. From the boom mike showing up in shots, the reuse of stock footage, or actors purposely screwing up lines, the movie manages to keep all of the cheezy parts of these films which made them great.

they accepted the fact that at least one of them was a clone very quickly. it was lacking a "holy shit, i'm a clone!" phase, you know?
and then the newer one didn't seem to notice that the older one was falling apart. presumably it was denial, but it felt like they left out a scene or two.

also, weak probably isn't the right word. it was still awesome, but i want a director's cut or something.

Ah I see where you're coming from. I tend to view the film as more of a very deep character study instead of a true hard science fiction film now so perhaps that's why some of the issues I've heard people talk about don't really seem all that big to me. Also I think the movie is pretty complete and I don't think there's going to be any director's cut. Though I have heard that Jones does want to make a trilogy out of the film and I'm all for that.

Also, last I saw was some MST3k film. I remember them being so much funnier when I watched that when I was younger. I had a couple laughs, but they were thoroughly unamusing through most of it.

Kick Ass.

Okayish-good? I dunno

Since you don't have any opinions, here are mine.

Kick Ass was awesome. The execution of the action and humor was perfect. Nicholas Cage as always is a force to be reckoned with on screen. The choice of music was excellent. The style was pleasing to the eyes, and it is clear that Director Matthew Vaughn knew what he was doing. My problem with the movie was with not with the way it was made, but rather was a problem with the main character. He makes all the wrong decisions at all the wrong times. While this is initially a character trait based in humor, after a while it just gets annoying. His decision to become a costume wearing superhero instead comes off as being inspired by aspergers’ rather than teen rebellion. Part of the movie’s charm is that he doesn’t really have any idea how to fight, but his persistence in trying to fight got old and annoying. I found myself waiting for Hit Girl and Big Daddy, the much cooler characters, to return to the screen. What got me most about this movie, however was though Lizewski was a clueless, awful character, things go well for him in a way that makes no sense when applied in remotely real-life situations, and the whole thing comes off as just a vehicle for the wish fulfillment of Vaughn, who co-wrote the screenplay. Overall, though the movie was humorous, action packed, essentially enjoyable, and well made, the quality of my experience was brought down by the utterly unlikeable protagonist and the and the unreasonably optimistic outcome of his actions. I give Kick-Ass three stars out of five.

Hot Tub Time Machine. Pretty good.

I thought John Cusack getting stabbed in the face then getting drunk, smoking pot, doing lines of coke, and eating shrooms, then writing poetry was pretty hilarious. But there were great funny moments throughout.

That was funny but I was unable to suspend my disbelief that he'd be completely sober like 20 minutes later.

I know some people who have done stuff like that and they were just completely dead. I don't know how he was coherent in the first place.

Full Metal Jacket.

Great movie. Only part I outright disliked was when Surfin' Bird started playing.

Also Ellen Page really isn't that strong of an actor.

My friend thinks that everybody got out while Leo went into double limbo. His theory is that while leo and ellen are 4 deep (four levels down) he is killed by Molly, but he dies after he doesn't kick back to four. So his double limbo dream is that he thinks he made it out.

In the end how deep where they? Leo had to go four deep to get Scarecrow, right? But why is Ken Wataname in there too because Molly didn't kill him. He would be in Scarecrow's mind because Scarecrow's extraction defenses when they were one deep eventually did the fatal damage.

Hard Candy?

Never seen it, been planning on it though.

@Shadow

If leo is in double limbo, than asian guy must be there too. I assume that by then he must be batshit insane, because he was old already. I guess to "honor his agreement" he made a world exactly like real life where Leo could be with his family. That's the only conclusion I can come up with. Also, it doesn't matter who killed you, if you die, you go into limbo. I assume everyone goes to the same limbo.

I guess it makes more sense that everybody is in the same limbo but just the way they set it up I feel more inclined to think that there are separate limbos.

The kids are wearing the same clothing as they were in his memories so I think that it is probably double limbo.

I think the rabbit hole goes deeper than this. When his wife mentions that his "real" world seems ridiculous it kind of hit me. If you think about the technology, isn't it kind of weird? Why would you hook something like an IV up to someone to bind their dreams together? Doesn't that seem kind of like a hospital thing? What if this guy just had an accident at some point and the entire thing is just a massive dream sequence while he's in a coma, perhaps fragments of it are actual memories, like the kids and the wife killing herself and he just did something stupid after that that put him in a coma. That's kind of what I'm thinking.

I think the double limbo is enirely plausible and I could also see an argument for everything working out (the top at the end clearly looked like it was about to fall over before they cut away, it wasn't a consistent spin like some of the previous shots they showed), but the general design of the sleep machine also made me wonder if the entire thing wasn't a coma.

So you're saying that in the first place that everything is a dream and we're operating in his dream world? It would make sense because in the movie they talk about how you never remember the beginning of the dream and everything starts in medias res. You start with him being found on shore.

I think that it is at least double limbo because the children were wearing all the same clothing and hadn't aged from his memory, which to be honest we have no frame of reference to judge the time on. I suppose that there could be a chance the kids were playing in the same place with the same clothes as he left them but that isn't believable.

The more I think about it I'm pretty sure that he didn't get out. Whether or not the entire thing was a dream, I'm not sure.

Yeah, that's basically what I think. If you'll recall when he spun the top it usually either fell off the surface (leaving the test indecisive) or someone walked in on him and he ended up scooping it up quickly(again, indecisive). Even if it did end up falling over sometime I forgot about, assuming it's his own dream and he expects it to fall over, he might make it fall over because he controls the dream. The entire "test" may have just been placed in there so he could convince himself he wasn't dreaming even though he was.

I think you could have been a bit more subtle by not changing your punctuation/capitalization style with this troll.
