Terminator Salvation
Very meh, partly because I was in the third row and my ears were getting very angry with me due to the constant "BRAAAAAAWWWWWWW! BROOOOOOOOOOOOOM! CLAAAAAAANGGGGGGGG! WHOMMMMMMMMM!" etc. Also, must every scene include random showers of sparks coming from nowhere. It's kind of sad that action movies are the highest-grossing films, because you'd think humanity would demand a little more spiritual nourishment than that.

What I think I didn't like about it is that about half an hour in, (the first mention of Kyle Reese) I realized that the whole movie was going to cover stuff from the Terminator cannon that's already been more or less revealed. So from that point forward I was kind of let down and bored because I already knew what was coming in a general sense.
Ultimately, while it had a lot of action and sated my desire to see killer robots from the future wreck shit for the time being, it was disappointing, because every Terminator movie is naturally going to be compared to T2, which, in my opinion, is setting the bar pretty high (at least in terms of movies about killer robots from the future). I think what they missed in this one was the sense of terror the other ones evoked. This was more of a war movie, and less of a "oh god, what crazy, unexpected shit is that unstoppable robot going to try now to kill <x> Connor?"
Or maybe I just think too much about things.

Damn, was that book ruined. I like the fact that they can't even admit to the movie being based on Isaac Asimov's book and can merely at the end put that the movie was "suggested" by Asimov's I, Robot.
On it's own, it was halfway decent. As an "adaptation" of I, Robot, it made me want to claw my brains out.

I seem to be the only one who thought Gran Torino was trash. I mean, did Clint Eastwood go down to the local Wok to find his costars? I also could never reconcile how deep Boom-Boom-whatever-the-fuck-his-name's voice was with the fact that he looked like a six year old. And the whole middle segment of the movie? Where they spend 45 minutes of the movie doing work? Those Asians were definitely not gangster, and that Catholic priest guy couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. I left before the ending, but I heard it had cringe-inducing christ-like overtones. Whoopee. I've seen better anti-racism movies in my sixth grade health class.

Movie was a lot better than the previous ones. I noticed it seems they put a lot more effort into the scenery. Acting didn't make me twinge, though Harrys crying scene at the end was kinda 'hmm' but they didn't show his face and it lasted five seconds so it was okay.
The cinematography was miles better than the other ones. But this time I actually noticed things that were deeper than just obvious dialogue. Like lighting effects, and jeez, even appropriate color schemes.

Yeah, I saw HP yesterday too.
My thoughts on it: Jaw-dropping cinematography. I loved when the ink from the pensive formed the buildings and landscape of the memory. Also the apparating was really cool. My problem is the movie didn't quite capture the tiny plot of nuances of the book, which cause it to build to an unbearable level of tension. Consequently, the movie felt like a whole bunch of time was spent on not too much happening. Acting was so-so, but, visually, I can't think of three English teenagers who would have made a better Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Definitely seeing some depth to the characters, except for Harry, who, at best, is a blank-slate type of character that brings out the positive characteristics in those around in. They really did a poor job at developing him. The teen drama stuff was funny/trenchant, but it's hard to take it seriously when, on the other side you have the world on the verge of dark magic apocalypse. I almost cried when they all raise their wands for Dumbledore – almost. This book is mostly a bridge for the shocking finale, and less a tied up story with a beginning, middle and end, and so I can't fault the filmmakers, because they still managed to keep it interesting for the entire 2 1/2 hour (?) length.
Captain Piano
07-25-2009, 05:22 PM
Ooh, ooh! And the music was wonderful!
Although, watching the movie made me realize a potential complaint that I'm surprised isn't brought up more often: Harry Potter promotes drug use. I mean, let's face it, almost every major plot movement came about as the result of some altering of the mind/mood at the hands of magic. Ron's behavior on the love potion was an almost too-obvious nod to teens on ecstasy. Harry's luck potion reminded me of people on Adderall – always on top of things, totally focused. And there was of course the copious alcohol consumption, I didn't miss Hermione's drunkenly blissful embrace with the boys moments before they crossed paths with the cursed Katie Bell. And Hagrid and Slughorn could only have been described as shitfaced.
Mixed Berry Hotcakes.

The scenes that were violent, were very violent, enough to make me squirm in a couple of places.
But there's actually very few violent scenes. The dialogue is just brilliant. And it stays incredibly fast for a two and a half hour movie.

Movie rant: I get upset when so-called movie buffs can't shut up about actors. Actors are the tools directors use to get their points across. An actor who was great in Movie X could easily have been terrible in Movie Y. It's a sad life for actors, because they are basically whores, who whore out their ability to act like other people to anyone willing to pay them a suitable sum. You have your high-class whores, like Brad Pitt, and then your common 5-cents-for-a-handjob street hags. I once sat through an hour-long conversation of two people shooting off about what actors they liked, like they were freaking collectible cards.
Heath Ledger. Go.
Johnny Depp. Go.
Brad Pitt. Go.
Daniel Day Lewis. Uh oh. Go.

There were a lot of scenes I didn't care for, and I could've done without the jew-girl plot, and as a whole I felt the film didn't mesh together very well. That said, I still think it was a pretty good movie, if only because of [spoiler]Hitler getting brutally shot to death with a fucking tommy gun, then shot some more[/spolier]. The significantly longer cut will probably be much better.
I agree, it felt like a hodge-podge, and many of the scenes suffered from "cool Tarantino dialogue" syndrome, where the things probably sound a lot more awesome to that squirelly little freak when he says them in his head. See also: Kill Bill.

I assumed he picked it because of the connection between the line about the green eyes and the line about putting out the fire with gasoline.
So to recap, he picked an anachronistic song (the only one in the film, no less) and tenuously connected it to a scene where the lyrics of the song somewhat describe what we are seeing/about to see on screen (which, to me, is an incredibly hamhanded reason for any director to include any song in any film). A scene which, honestly, was pretty stupid to begin with and probably didn't even need to make the final cut.
Am I alone in thinking this guy is a hack?

Now, Tarantino does not make the greatest movies, in a strictly objective sense. But that doesn't make them any less entertaining.

I read an interesting article on Inglorious Basterds which discussed the various portrayals of morality in the film. Because, on the one hand, you have the Basterds, who are the good guys, who engage in very morally questionable actions Yet, because of how they are portrayed, we cheer for them and laugh with them. Conversely, we have no sympathy for the nazis and believe they deserve the inhumane treatment visited upon them by the basterds. Conceivably, it's a "fight fire with fire" type of deal, but that doesn't really satisfy me, and Tarantino complicates things further by dropping a couple subtle clues – at the screening Hitler is cracking up throughout the entire movie, which is basically composed of shot after shot of young german parted-hair kid shooting American soldiers. The kid says of the movie "Goebbels thinks this will be his masterpiece." Later on in the movie, in the final scene, Brad Pitt echoes the line, saying "Y'know, I think this might be my masterpiece." And it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the one really speaking those lines is Quentin Tarantino, and he's talking about the movie you just watched. So where does this leave us? A movie which lightly bandies around extreme depictions of violence for use as entertainment, while at the same time seemingly dismissing such spectacles of violence as stupid, the cinema of brainwashed Nazi propagandists. Yet the movies takes as its initial basis the notion that the Basterds are justified in what they are doing because the nazis did some really fucked up shit. But the blatant historical inaccuracies kind of destroy any shred of hope for this movie approaching realism, or some semblance of it, and it's only remaining value as a historical piece is that it satisfies a burning (and justified) hatred of nazis by jews. Perhaps Tarantino, in blatantly manipulating history and morality, was trying to show that audiences really don't give a shit about verisimilitude or ethicalness when it comes to entertainment – as long as they don't feel manipulated by the story, they'll watch anything. Done right, you can make a movie about any topic, however reviled it may be by respectable society.

I actually assumed from the outset that this movie was just another Tarantino gorefest that he assumed his audience would accept because the violence was visited against Nazis.

Holy wall of text.
In short, Quentin said "I'm going to make Jews act like Nazis and I'll bet my audiences will still cheer them because of historical context!"
Another theory from my Film Appreciation teacher is that the message was "It's highly unrealistic to just round everyone up that you don't like and set them on fire, stop trying to do that America" but he said that it was also just his interpretation of it and probably not intended.

I personally thought the film was entertaining, but I kind of rubbed me the wrong way – it was almost like Tarantino was parodying his own style, which may actually be the case as his brand of moviemaking + a WWII setting is an odd juxtaposition. The beginning was pretty much the best part, but after that the long passages of dialogue just seemed kitschy, and had the effect of taking all the steam out of the plot (which is actually a halfway decent plot), and, by the time the "stunning finale" came around, I just didn't care enough for it to blow me away the way it should have.

Ah, I took it the opposite. The long dialogue scenes served as perfect buildup, and grounded the movie in semi-reality, so that when the finale came I was more than ready to accept it, not only as badass, but as maybe plausible. Which it clearly is not.

I loved that shit.

Wait that was that movie that Heath Ledger and Johnny Depp played the same character in, right? Is that out on DVD?

Nope, it's still in theatres.

I tried to watch `The Babysitter` today, but it was so boring. I then watched `Rent`. I liked it.

Miller's Crossing, for the second time, except this time I watched it in...Marijuana-Vision, enhanced with THC-D™ technology!
But, seriously, wow. What a good flipping movie.

It really depends whether or not your high. Or if you are in the mood for such things. Or 12. If it's none of those, it can be pretty grating.

Uuuuuh.
Borat?
I personally thought the film was entertaining, but I kind of rubbed me the wrong way – it was almost like Tarantino was parodying his own style, which may actually be the case as his brand of moviemaking + a WWII setting is an odd juxtaposition. The beginning was pretty much the best part, but after that the long passages of dialogue just seemed kitschy, and had the effect of taking all the steam out of the plot (which is actually a halfway decent plot), and, by the time the "stunning finale" came around, I just didn't care enough for it to blow me away the way it should have.
I saw it in theatres when it first came out, and I felt that the long (very long) passages of dialogue made me feel really anxious and tense about what was going to happen, whether it was the intro or in the bar. That segued into the finale, and other periods of climatic action, and it worked. I tried watching it a little while ago, again, and the same passages of dialogue bored me to death. I think that part of the mystique of it is that you don't know what is coming next. When you do, it falls flat.

Youth in Revolt. Holy ass-balls, was that a terrible movie.

Kind of want to see Red Dawn, the remake.

The Invention of Lying

I heard that too. Which sucks, because Ricky Gervais is generally hilarious and the movie sounded like it had potential.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed Ghost Town. Gervais is a funny guy, but I think he should stick to stand-up / officing or extrasing around.
But the last film I saw was Moon, and if not a good movie, was pretty interesting to watch. I enjoyed it.

Yeah, this is probably accurate.

Fuck you, Moon was amazing.
I said I enjoyed it and it was interesting and also Sam Rockwell did a very good job.
I just thought that some of it was kind of dumb and inaccurate to real life.
I lurve Kefin Spacey.

 But its a science fiction film dealing with clones on the moon. Its not supposed to be an accurate representation of real life...
The last movie I saw was In the Loop. If you want a great British satire on politicians dealing with a war this is it.

I dunno, I just think that if the average person found out that they had a clone, there would be a lot less passive aggressive angst. Maybe I just took it wrong because they don't even make it clear whether or not cloning is something that happens all of the time.

Gamer. I found it fairly meh; it was an interesting premise, but the pacing was awful and there were a decent number of plot holes that I was just not a fan of.
