Physics and Astronomy.
Plan on specializing in Dark Matter/Dark Energy:
Einstein's equations contained a constant that, when solved, shouldn't be there. Einstein himself said that including said constant was his "greatest blunder." He added the constant because he first believed the Universe to be static; that is everything staying in a relative position. Future advancements, even during his life time, showed that, despite his original beliefs, the Universe is not static. The equations without a constant illustrate that the Universe is either expanding or contracting, though the equations themselves do not distinguish which to be true. Common sense tells us that it should be contracting, or at least the expansion should be slowing (assuming the explosion effect of the Big Bang hasn't yet slowed to a halt). If any of this confuses you, feel free to ask or pm me...

However, by measuring the red shifts on distant galaxies over time (even as short as a couple years), we find that the expansion is actually speeding up. Gravitational laws would NEVER allow this to happen, meaning something else is effecting the formation of the Universe. Because the red shift is actually observably different (though only through advanced computers, as it's so minuscule), we can find the change in the redshift and determine the expansion is accelerating.

We know our Universe is Flat, as opposed to Open and Closed due to the way our geometry works. (Just trust me on this one, multi-dimensional geography blows). Flat means Planar, so to speak. Imagine one point or plane extending in all directions at the same rate. Roughly spherical in shape. Open is shaped like a saddle for a horse. Closed is like a sphere. Except those last 2 don't really exist as the shapes I just said. That is because illustrating a 3-dimensional object as a single image will distort viewpoints. So really, while a flat universe is the contents of a sphere, a Closed universe is on the surface only and an open universe is just ÷÷÷÷ed up and I don't have the time or patience to really explain it.

Because we know shape of our universe, the relative age (~13.7 Billion years, known through the cosmic microwave background), and a few other concepts (such as its expansion, the speed of light, etc.), we can determine the required mass of the universe for it to exist as a flat universe (again, trust me here as this is a ÷÷÷÷÷ to explain). When we estimate the conventional mass of the universe—stars, planets, and floating hydrogen and helium—we discover the numbers to be off. A slight miscalculation is understandable, but we end up about 94% short of the required mass for a flat universe. Something is amiss.

Furthermore, we can observe a phenomenon known as Dark Matter in a number of ways. I'll stick to one for simplicities' sake. Gravitational Lensing is an event that occurs when a bright object is directly behind a massive object. We'll use a Quasar (the brightest things in the universe) and a massive galaxy for the example. The Quasar is directly behind the galaxy to us. Around the galaxy, however, we observe the quasar in about 4 or 5 different locations. This is because the universe bends the light so it still hits us. (I can illustrate this or find a picture if need be, just ask.) When we estimate the number of stars in the galaxy, calculate the collective mass of said stars, add on the mass of the gases surrounding the stars (which believe it or not, is much higher than the mass of the stars), and get a rough total, we find that the mass is too small to lens the quasar. Around and in the galaxy is approximately 6 times the mass calculate is dark matter.

Of the universe, only 4% is matter that we know of, such as carbon, iron, helium, and hydrogen while the remaining 96% is a combination of Dark Matter and Dark Energy (to those of you that want me to nail it out, the estimates are 23% dark matter and 73% dark energy, though I'm with many scientist in believing that they're not necessarily separate). Dark Energy is believed to be the driving force in the expansion of the universe.

I'll add on more later but i'm tired of typing this wall of text right now.
tl;dr: you're probably not going to find this interesting. astrophysics in a nutshell.

You're a sociopath, Kedi, you keep mixing em up. :PHere's a different dilemma for me here.

If I were to object that I'm a sociopath, then given the probabilities, I'm most likely lying, thus I'd be supporting your claim.

However, if I were to accept that I was a sociopath, then it would actually mean that I were not one to begin with, due to nature of sociopathology.

On the other hand, I might mastermind-trick you into believing that I'm not a sociopath by claiming that I actually am a sociopath. Thus I'd be decieving with the truth.

Hmmmm.

Either way, studying about people will make it easier for me to ÷÷÷÷ with them. :blank:

Honestly, I don't see that it's that much different. To joe the plumber (lol) our majors seem fairly useless (dark matter? wtf?) but they both (mine at least) honestly have really important and practical uses that can affect the world in which we live.

It's true that my job will have very little effect on the world during my lifetime, though advancements will greatly help future generations. Or so it is my solemn belief.

Speaking of joe the plumber, i work at a bar where this joe the plumber clone goes to drink. total capitalist. that's the only way society will work. well, when the bar's dead, i troll this asshole with 3 words. He's drunk and I'm bored, so all I have to say is "I'm a socialist." Holy hell, his face turns red faster than I can back away and he flies off the handle: you ÷÷÷÷ing kids are ruining our country, economy, and ways of life, etc. One time I told this girl that was hammered hitting on me (i hate her, she's basically a pop-culture slave that only listens to what mtv tells her and discusses what is in People or Cosmo magazines. She's not even that cute.) to tell him she was a hardcore liberal that believes in universalized health care (obama said it once so she thought it was brilliant). She did. She still hasn't forgiven me.

A friend informed me that on average, freelance writers with a bachelor's degree make something like 50k a year.

I guess, but how accurate is that? average could mean one making nothing and the other making 100k

mrs_bun
02-17-2009, 11:37 PM
No? It means nine making zerok and one making a million. :V

Really it prolly means 50k on average, though. Averages are good estimates, because there are very few j.k rowlings running around to mess up the averages.

Jabby
02-17-2009, 11:38 PM
I mean, it's yahoo news accurate. Take that for what it's worth to you.

But regardless it's economically feasible to make a living as a writer. It's not extremely lucrative, but I would estimate $30k a year minimum, with the strong potential to sell out to Hollywood and make more.

That's reassuring.

...How many classes can you have on Jazz?

It's pretty intense, honestly. It requires a different sort of instrumental lesson plan (in addition to classical lessons), an improvisation class every semester, jazz theory/piano, the evolution of jazz styles, a class on the music industry (due to the nature of the work I'll be doing), and some other stuff that I can't think of at the moment. All this in addition to the classes that every other music major has to take.

Jazz is a really different approach to music, and thus jazz students require a different educational approach.

I completely agree with you.

Basically I'm studying this in school because I need a degree in order to please society and eventually get a graduate degree so I can possibly teach jazz/music in general at some sort of institution, thus perpetuating the cycle of institutionalized jazz, an art form that should not be institutionalized, for a shitload of reasons. In many ways jazz has become an institutionalized art form like classical music (the Marsalis family and their ilk love this), whereas it should be (and in lesser-known circles of artists still is) an evolving art form.

Also college gives me four free years to study with really good teachers, develop my musical ability, and make connections with other musicians in order to be able to get work in the future.
