I thought that they gave up on that stupid, stupid gleemax social networking idea. :teach?: Not that anyone cares, and rightly not, but if it is possible to make anyone care less:

Wizards of the Coast is pleased to announce that we're upgrading to a new community platform. We are in the process of migrating our forums to a system that includes a host of new features like friends lists, groups, an invite system and calendar, blogs and wiki.

The forums will be down until at least August 26, and possibly through the end of the month. We apologize for the inconvenience.

In the meantime we would like to invite you to continue the conversation on:

Facebook - D&D
Facebook - Magic

Twitter - Magic
Twitter - Magic Pro Tour

Or, if you prefer, we invite you to celebrate Analog Appreciation Week. Check your calendar, order a pizza, and play games with your friends!
We'll see you in the new community.

I dont' understand why they had to change anything pre-gleemax.

Also, how hard is it to do all of this offline and then bring it up all at once, thereby obviating the need to take the forums offline for a week+?

OMG OMG, IT'S ANOLOG APPRECIATATION WEEK, SUPER EXCITING STUFF.

So in two and a half months when they finally get it up again, who will want to do join my group? We'll be able to check our calendars and order pizzas with our friends.

I thought they did (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/08/25/186246) as well.

Lol, reporting at its finest. Note that the writer of the article used the words "critical failure," while Randy Buehler merely said that he was too ambitious, not that they were giving up the social networking. Don't believe everything you read, folks.

I don't really care about either wizards or slashdot but frankly there isn't much else to believe because the blog post is gone. One can only believe the quote is true – in which case, this would be yet another "path" that may well end up in failure again.

maybe they are doing it all at once because they think gleemax originally failed because it was a pain in the ass when it was installed more gradually?

I thought gleemax was stupid in concept but the only thing I really disliked about it's execution was the new login system. Like I think it failed miserably as a networking site because it was still more or less just boards1.wizards.com, but I didn't really hate it's failure.

My guess is that the reason they had to take the forums down for a week is that they're using the same computers for the new forums as they did for the old ones, and they need a week to test that it all works.

Hardly needed. I suppose I can add that Wizards must think that some people aware of its forums are 3l33t hax0rz... but what else is there to say?

I'm actually kind of thinking that there might be some kind of reason we don't know of that they are trying to actively alienate their customer base. Maybe there's some kind of crazy business strategy behind it.

They should just get rid of the boards entirely, I remember when the Rec Room was always busy with something, but now you can post something there and no one will respond for a week or more. It's a chore just to actually get to the forums, and anyone just casually browsing would just give up instead.

From what I saw, it also looks pretty easily hackable. At least the first implementation sucked as it thought :/ in the URL that the BBcode adds in was an emoticon, breaking the HTML tag, eating up some text into the tag itself. I wouldn't know if something like this is still possible, as I don't care enough to go through making an account.

Say, didn't they make almost that exact same mistake six years ago, and someone here got banned for exploiting it?

Glad to see they*'ve learned.

* To be fair they've probably changed their entire staff a couple of times since then. Perhaps "they" could then refer instead to whoever's making the hiring decisions.

I remember coming home completely smashed one night, logging into WotC and making a post containing about 10 instances of "nigger", evading the filter of course. EDIT: this was a few weeks after they remade the forum into that facebook crap

Haven't bothered to go and check if I got banned for that.

Yes, I know I'm very clever and very mature.

Hasn't it been a few mistakes over the years? Or were those not technologically related to this one?

IIRC, BB code exploits were a phase, they got through it in what I would randomly guess six months, after I kept harassing them and someone else created that forum virus. Some of the other hacks were of other kinds. Now they've made the same exploit (as well as many others) possible again.
