I basically listen to nothing but T. Rex, Nick Cave, and The Jesus and Mary Chain anymore. Not really sure why but there you have it.

What do you people usually listen to? Any new releases you're looking forward too? Have an affinity for anime soundtracks?

Go.

I used to listen to a lot of anime related music, but I got tired of it at some point because it's basically 99% pop. I still occasionally turn it on for nostalgia though.

Nowadays I mostly listen to metal (pretty much any subgenre that doesn't involve excessive growling, that shit is stupid) and classical.

excessive growling
i used to not like that.
then i found out that a lot of it was completely awesome if i just payed attention to the instruments and not the growling.
then i started to enjoy the growling. (well, some of it.)

i have been listening to mostly the same old crap recently. need stuff to download.

Whats wrong with pop?

Not much, it just gets repetitive after a while. The songs start to blend together. Hence why I got tired of it.

See I can't not pay attention to it. It'le have an epic intro and I'm getting pumped for an awesome song then some growler comes on and shits all over everything.

It's like a cockblock except for music.

Depends on my interests at any given moment, but I will always listen to NIN. Lately, I've been listening to the new Prodigy album (can't wait for a non-transcoded version to come out, Run With the Wolves is one of the best tracks and sounds less than 128 k on my version) and some stuff by this Dutch group called Nobody Beats the Drum.

Its also a really bad album. ÷÷÷÷ing hate Swans. So much better music came out of that scene.

But yea the Jesus Lizard albums are pretty alright.

I like Swans. Moreso for Gira's later folksy stuff, but the heavy rawness of of their early albums still pleases my ears.

I've lost most of my appreciation for NIN. Besides his instrumental tracks, I've outgrown my angst and just can't relate to the tunes anymore.

What are some good albums that came out last year? I've been delving too much in old music.

The last three things on your list make me want to vomit.

And +t, I actually love Thom Yorke's vocals and lyrics, but it's definitely a matter of opinion. Of their work, In Rainbows is definitely my favorite, but Hail to the Thief comes in at a VERY close second, even if it gains a ton of points conceptually.

I honestly have no clue how I feel about The Killers! On the one hand, they're whiney, melodramatic, Coldplay-esque alt rock. On the other hand, I love them.

Anyone listen to Citizen Cope?

Coldplay, along with Death Cab and Kings are uninspired, plastic Radiohead pretenders. Whenever I hear their songs, I feel like they were shat out of a computer. Also, Grammy-winning Viva la Vida? Stolen for Joe Satriani.

First of all, I'm sick of the Coldplay comparisons to Radiohead. They have similar music styles the same way that Boston and Journey do, but that doesn't make Journey plastic pretenders. Chris Martin writes great emotional songs that sometimes Thom Yorke can't compete with. The Scientist? Violet Hill? Very few songwriters can give a song as much emotion as Chris Martin does with Coldplay.

Saying that Death Cab is a Radiohead pretender is retarded, the bands are nothing alike. And it's very obvious that you have never heard the Kings of Leon if you think they were even inspired by Radiohead, they're much more like The Strokes than anything. Still they are incredibly unique and can't really be compared to any other band, certainly not Radiohead. Perhaps you should listen to music before you make baseless criticisms.

They used to play my college every year in the spring at our house party, which is basically 96 hours of blackouts for anyone who's ever participated in one. I may have told this story before, but one year I was completely wrecked from from the night before and we started hitting the beer bongs at something like 10 AM the next morning. These guys were always super cool when they played there, often stopping to banter and pass bottles of booze out into the crowd and whatnot. Anyhow, this year at one point, they stop playing and started passing a bowl around on stage, when Jimmy Haha looked out in the audience and was like, "Hey you guys want some?", and one of the other guys said, "Nah man, these kids are all into their X and shit", at which point I felt the need to yell "÷÷÷÷ ECTASY! I just want you all to know that there is a song called "Freak Gasoline Fight Accident"

Here are the lyrics:all hail the unseen one he who dances in the shadows
bathing in the darkness exuding from the very bowels
of mankind, with such longanimity had he tolerated
this anomie, but now with unimagined malice he prays
for an end to the atrocity known as man

(chorus)
and when the world finally comes to an end,
he'll simply laugh and smile, for he would take such
comfort in knowing there would be no tomorrow, he'd
take such comfort in knowing we will never see another day

Sweet irony has reared itself again, in that the
one who is disgusted with the way mankind has
degenerated wishes for all that is living to suffer

Understand that he is hopeless, he is bitter, and
he is filled with great spite, from witnessing first
hand man's decline, he is simply hopeless, he is
bitter and is filled with great spite

(chorus)

Bidding Farewell to a loathesome world...

It's actually pretty good by bad metal standards :V

On topic: I've never heard Ironman. I really like Supreme Clientele and Fishscale. The thing about those two ghostface albums is that they just don't sound that wu tang to me. They don't have enough RZA production.

RZA did the Afro Samurai soundtracks. I liked them, and I'm not a big fan of hiphop/rap (to the point of I don't know the difference between the two).

THREAD NECRO

So I saw this dude named Robert Francis on Carson Daly's late-night abortion of a TV show last night. Anybody ever heard of this guy? He put on a pretty amazing performance and I was inspired to look him up today now that I'm more conscious than I was last night at 2:30AM. After listening to his stuff from various websites, I'm appalled that I enjoyed someone so wishy-washy and folksy.

Here's a link to the video (song starts about 2:07 in):
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=53615574

Compare with shitty studio version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE_FhAGYy8w

Seems like he suffers from "much-better-live" syndrome.

Shadow
07-03-2009, 07:54 PM
oh huh. Not many people are better live than studio work. Well, actually, that's wrong. I think lots of bands and artists play differently than they would in a studio. I wouldn't say if it is better or not cause when you go to a show it's supposed to be engaging and interesting and fun. Like the band is supposed to suck you in and you have to play differently than you would in a studio to get that so sometimes the music just isn't as good. And if they don't have a good sound guy. :V

and why did you have to be so mean to me fonzy? :(

Well the thing is that if I could buy an album of songs like the one on the Carson Daly show, I would do it. The actual recorded songs I'm hearing? Yeah, bland and boring and I'm not interested.

Oh yeah, that. Well the thing is that I was a teenager during the years that douchey 90s alt-rock hipsterism was going on. I listened to the Pixies, Pavement, Dinosaur, Jr., Sonic Youth, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Mudhoney, etc., etc., for a good couple years and pretended to like them because I was impressionable teenager trying to fit in with the hip crowd, but now that I look back, it seems to me like most of it was never that good to begin with. I was also stoned a lot back then, so...

Shadow

Bumpin' dis thread.

CD purchases:

Robert Francis
Couldn't resist the impulse to buy this. It's oooook; has it's moments, but it's definitely not a CD I could listen to a thousand times over like other ones I own.

Eminem - Relapse
I was really let down by this record. It's got its moments, but overall it seems like the dude's losing his edge.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
WTF techno album. I want to like it...but I just can't.

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Source Tags and Codes
Resisted them for a long time because I heard they were hipster art-rock, but this album is pretty good and gets lots of listens from me.

Them Crooked Vultures
Amazing.

Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris
Not their best, but still pretty good. I've become a huge Josh Homme groupie.

Black Francis - Bluefinger
I think Teenager of the Year is better all-around, but I like some individual songs on this album better than anything on TotY. I should probably get more of his solo stuff, as those are the only two albums of his I have.

Velvet Revolver - Libertad
I've only listened to this once so far and now I'm not exactly sure why I bought it. Most of the songs seem standard and yawn-inducing.

Lacuna Coil - Shallow Life
Probably the last Lacuna Coil album I'll ever buy. Boring.

Shadow

For you I'll listen again but in general I find that super groups can't focus well on writing music. Usually in a band one or two members are the driving force in the creative process with small contributions from the other members. In super groups everybody is really talented or main song writer from their respective groups which leads to a mix of alright ideas but so unfocused that it's just not good.
